In Soccer and In Cancer Care, It Always Comes Down to Saves

In the summer of 2014, former U.S. Men’s National Team goalkeeper Tim Howard played one of the most memorable games of his career against Belgium – 16 saves in a single World Cup match. Against one of the best offenses in the world. A record that still stands.

Most people remember the number. The highlight reel. But when Tim talks about that match, he remembers something else: “It didn’t feel any different from any other game. It was just save, save, save. You stop thinking and the training takes over.” For 90 minutes and then extra time, it wasn’t about heroics. It was about being ready, repeatedly, for whatever came next, and recognizing that every moment matters.

That’s where One Save Changes Everything starts. It’s our new campaign, but it’s also how we think. The saves that matter most rarely make headlines. They are made by many people, in many places—and together, they move cancer care forward.

What a “Save” Looks Like at BeOne

In soccer, a save is the goalkeeper’s moment – the split second that keeps the team on the field, in the game, in the championship. In cancer care, “saves” look different. They can be an early diagnosis; a clinical trial that gives someone another option; a precise call when time is short; or the right support reaching a patient exactly when they need it. Each one changes what comes next.

Some saves take years. Others happen in a moment – a decision, a conversation, an act of care that shifts the path for a patient and their family. Rarely do these moments make headlines, but every one makes a difference. Similarly, cancer progress rarely comes from one big moment. It’s built by researchers, clinicians, advocates, caregivers, and companies like BeOne showing up with focus, resilience, and grit, day after day.

Built Differently to Change the Course of Cancer

Saves don’t happen by luck. They happen because someone trained for a moment before it arrived and the team was already in place when it did. That’s the mindset at BeOne. We’re not here to run someone else’s playbook. We’re here to move faster than the disease, go further than the field has gone, and keep challenging when the status quo simply isn’t good enough.

That has meant taking on targets others walked away from. Designing trials around “can we do better?” instead of “can we match it?” And decisively ending programs that didn’t clear a high bar so we could put our full weight behind the ones that do.

It has also meant building an organization where research, development, manufacturing, and delivery stay connected – because a save that never reaches a patient isn’t a save. Today, more than a dozen new molecules are in clinical development, across lung, breast, gastrointestinal, and hematologic cancers. Each one started with a question someone at BeOne wouldn’t let go of. Each one is a save still in the making.

When Progress Reaches People, Everything Changes

A breakthrough that never reaches a patient is just a finding. That’s why we plan for access from the start – because the people who need new medicines most aren’t always in the places where delivering them is easiest.

We run clinical trials in more than 45 countries. We build the supply and regulatory paths to serve broad populations. And we partner where it helps us reach farther than we could alone, so scientific progress turns into real-world help for patients and families.
